Delivery/collection of food during Covid-19
In these bizarre, uncertain times we hear extraordinary tales about community. Both good and bad. At HOT we tend to lean towards the best in Hastings and St Leonards where there is a lot of good nature, humour and a very definite sense of community. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths has put together a list of some of the food outlets and shops that are at present delivering or have produce ready for collection so you can eat healthily, collect your goods and stay safe.
It is not an exhaustive list, so if anyone has heard of other food outlets that would benefit local people, please post a comment below and we can add it to the end of this article.
As you would expect of Hastings and St Leonards folk, they have, in these uncertain times, gone the extra mile. The companies are being responsible, trying to organise deliveries or collections as safely as possible, with personal contact kept to a minimum; payment direct on the website or with contactless cards, deliver, or pick up and go.
Here are a few of those boldly going where none has gone before.
Store cupboard items
Marina Fountain are providing a Click and Collect service: wine; bread, flour, milk, butter, rice, pasta, and a few staples like oil, eggs, lentils, yeast, passata, red lentils and porridge oats. At present it is a Collect service only.
Orders can be placed at any time, but collections are only Wednesday-Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 10am-1pm. Order on line, pay, note the order number and orders should be ready in about an hour. Drive up, open your boot, (you don’t have to have a car, you could walk there.) Phone or text once you are outside. Someone will come out, put your order in your boot. Drive off. Done.
They are offering 10% off the total order if you order a mixed box of six bottles of wine – add code BOOM to your order. 26 Caves Road, St Leonards-on-Sea TN38 0BY, tel. 01424 446354.
Dandelion Deli staff are offering a delivery or collection service. They are keeping themselves safe wearing masks and gloves and want their clients to keep Covid-19 free too. Subject to available supplies, there will be basic hot meals, meat and vegetarian, sandwiches, sausage rolls and scotch eggs, soups and stews, cakes and some vegetables.
There will also be ‘Ration Boxes’ for delivery. These will be made up of a mix of essential supplies – store cupboard meal items like rice, pasta, sauces, canned beans and pulses, wine and beer, and of course some feel-good sweet treats. Life can’t be all doom and gloom.
Dandelion Deli, 14 Kings Road, St Leonards, TN37 6EA. Call 01424 722154 during opening hours. Deliveries will be made in the afternoon between 2 and 3pm, depending on demand. Free delivery.
Hot meals
The Beacon are offering a local Sunday roast delivery service within a three-mile radius (which covers most of Hastings and St Leonards). Roast menus rotate week by week (roast lamb or lentil loaf this coming weekend). It seems to have been a much welcomed service, so the first Sunday demand was rather high and the service was a little chaotic, but they expect that things will calm down as everyone gets used to the new system. So please be patient, after all, they are cooking and delivering a roast meal to your door. Ring 01424 431305 or email info@beaconhastings.co.uk.
Azur on St Leonards seafront opposite Marina have joined forces with Teddy’s Cocktail Bar and Grill for food delivery via Deliveroo or collection directly from Teddy’s in the Pavilion. Ring 01424 447461 and they will deliver food within the hour. Delivery times Monday-Saturday 12-8pm, Sunday 12-4pm. With an order of over £60 comes a free bottle of house wine.
Pizzas
Tommy’s Pizzeria, 28 Norman Rd, Saint Leonards, TN38 0EJ. Open Wednesday-Saturday, 4-9pm. You can have it delivered or collect – orders are left on a clean table inside the pizzeria. Timings can be uncertain depending on demand – Saturday night, understandably, can be busy. The menu is on their website, to keep things fresh they are regularly introducing new toppings. There is also wine, beer, soft drinks and a limited amount of freshly baked sourdough bread from their wood ovens. And when the fishing boats have been out, they will collect fresh fish for a Hastings fish pizza. Order, pay and wait. Or collect. Delivery free for orders of £15 or more.
Brewing Brothers at the Imperial, 119 Queens Road, Hastings TN34 1RL Open Thursday-Sunday, 11am-9pm. Only operating as a takeaway service for pizza and beer. Order online. Waiting time 20-60 minutes depending on demand at the time. Delivery £1.50-2.00.
Fresh veg and fruit
Sussex Fruits, 31-33 Bexhill Road, St Leonards TN38 OAH, 01424 718813. They started with fruit and veg orders emailed in, but that proved quite overwhelming. So to keep customers supplied they brought back their Buyers Box – a £15 box and a £25 box for collection only. The boxes contain the best and widest variety of fruit, veg and salad available. In addition there is a 25kg bag of potatoes for £17 extra.
Please call the landline ONLY – 01424 718813 – during working hours (8.30am-4pm) to place your order. Orders must be placed before 4pm for next day collection.
Good on Greens, 466 Old London Rd, Hastings TN35 5BG, tel. 01424 437065. They have fantastic fresh fruit and vegetables too. However, according to the useful neighbourhood site Next Door, “They’ve gone from having around 40 regular deliveries to over 400 in recent weeks. So dedicated to serving the community.”
As already said, this is not an exhaustive list but it shows that local businesses have ramped up their ways of being service to the locals. Support local businesses – there are also local farm shops, fishmongers and butchers – who do local deliveries too. We need them at any time, but particularly during these times. Stay safe.
