XR Hallowe’en

This Saturday, 31 October, Extinction Rebellion invites you to march through the Old Town “because The Earth is on Fire, because We Want to Live and to highlight the Climate & Ecological Emergency Bill”.

XR spokesperson Felix Lozano said: “Observing XR’s principles of non-violence and respect for all, participants will wear black – or be in themed colours of red, orange and white – with many dressed as skeletons and carry a light for fire. You are welcome to join us – please wear masks, maintain social distance and bring your creativity and placards with messages. We want to unite Hastings’ old traditional festivals with the global rebellion against the extinction of life on earth. An opportunity for the whole community to express our profound concerns.”

The protest march will begin at The Stade at 6 pm and end by 8 pm on the roundabout opposite the council building. The final route will be found on our Facebook (@XRHastingsStLeonards) and web page.

XR resassured HOT that a stringent risk assessment has been carried out and families are encouraged to attend. The march will remain outside at all times and social distancing will be maintained. Participants will be asked to stay in groups of 30, maintaining 2m distance between each other and wear masks. PPE and hand sanitisers are recommended for all those present.

There will be sombre drumming and some fire torches will be carried by Rebels. A Grandparents and Elders group will march to plead for ‘Help’ for the young’s future. An illuminated cycle ride setting off from St Leonards will join the march.

Bystanders are strongly advised to distance-join the march to show their support whilst maintaining appropriate social distance.

People wishing to join the march are asked to arrive at The Stade for 6pm. The illuminated cycle ride will meet at the pier gates at 6pm, and cycle towards St Leonards before heading to the Old Town to join the ride. Everyone who participates is asked to wear a mask and to respect social distancing and the non-violent ethos of XR.
