The Big Sleep 2017

The way it was last year – The Big Sleep in 2016

The Big Sleep 2017

Registration for The Big Sleep, the annual sponsored sleep-out raising funds for the Seaview Project, is now open. The Seaview Project’s sponsored mass sleep-out returns to The Stade this September, raising awareness and funds for some of the town’s most vulnerable people.

Building on the success of last year’s Big Sleep, which raised £28,779.87 *, registration is now open for those wishing to join in. This year, The Big Sleep takes place on Friday 22 September at the Stade Open Space in Hastings, running from 7.30pm to 7.00am the following morning and featuring musical entertainment from Hastings favourites Dr Savage, The Rufus Stone Band and King Size Slim. The entertainment is free and open to all between 8.00pm and 9.45pm.

The sleep-out is a ticketed event, which commences at 10.00pm in Seaview’s cardboard city on the Stade. Exclusively for those sleeping out, there will be an unplugged gig around the brazier from award-winning blues man King Size Slim and a bedtime story from a local personality.

The Seaview Project

Seaview is an open-access wellbeing centre that helps those living on the margins of society, the only one of its kind in Hastings and St Leonards. Most clients experience problems with their accommodation, which may be inadequate or involve sofa-surfing and/or sleeping rough on the streets. Due to reductions in government funding in recent years, Seaview relies more and more on donations.

Seaview provides affordable meals and drinks; emergency food parcels; a free clothes store and household goods store; free showers, haircuts and laundry facilities; a dedicated housing team; regular access to a nurse and podiatrist; and a range of activities to help and encourage people to reach their full potential.

For more information about Seaview, please visit The Seaview Project.

How you can help with The Big Sleep 2017

You can sign up to sleep out overnight and raise funds for the Seaview Project by gathering sponsorship. Cardboard boxes are provided: you bring a sleeping bag or blankets and provisions to make it through the night. Hot drinks will be available throughout the night, with porridge served the following morning.

If you don’t want to take part in the actual sleep-out, you can sponsor one of the many people who will actively participate.

Details for those wishing to take part:

Head to The Big Sleep Registration and sign up as an individual or a team.

Teams can request an Employee Engagement Tips Factsheet, donated by People Lab, the employee engagement specialists, for ideas on how to work together to fundraise.

There are prizes to be won for top fundraisers and sponsorship incentives return this year too: raise £75 or more and receive a Big Sleep T-shirt, raise £150 and get a hoodie. Our biggest individual and team fundraisers will receive special prizes on The Big Sleep stage.

Awareness 4 Action

The Big Sleep is organised by the Seaview Awareness 4 Action Group – A4A – comprising a group of volunteers who are passionate about the work of Seaview. For 32 years, Seaview has been supporting some of the most vulnerable people in Hastings and St Leonards, most of whom experience problems with their accommodation.

The reality of sleeping rough is not something experienced by the majority of people and – albeit for one night only – The Big Sleep will enable participants to engage with the reality of bedding down for the night with only a cardboard box and sleeping bag for warmth.

The Big Sleep is calling upon companies and individuals to sponsor the event. ALL funds raised go directly towards Seaview’s frontline services. Please head to The Big Sleep website to get involved or email info@thebigsleephastings.com if you would like to sponsor the event and have your brand displayed on Big Sleep merchandise and banners at the event.
