Community event on Hastings’ housing crisis
Hastings Housing Alliance are holding a community housing get together about the housing crisis this Sunday (14 July). Gabriel Carlyle reports.
Hot on the heels of a flurry of housing-related activism (see here, here and here), Hastings Housing Alliance are holding an afternoon of ‘discussions and solutions to the housing crisis’ this coming Sunday (14 July) in Cornwallis Gardens (TN34 1LR) from 2–6pm.
A flier for the event states:
‘Across Hastings people are facing high rents, mould and damp, overcrowding and evictions, or they are simply not able to find anywhere to live at all.
‘We’re getting people together to discuss the problems and the solutions with other local residents, campaigners, organisations, housing associations & politicians. Join us and have your say!’
In addition to discussions and stalls (see below) the event will also feature music from Barbarian Horde, Helen Hilina, Stacey Cohen and legendary community drumming group YYPFD.
According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, in May the average rent in Hastings was £925 a month, 43% of the median individual wage for the same month (£2,141).
