Big Energy Race

The Big Energy Race is an initiative created by The Global Action Plan: Creating the Climate for Change – and there’s still time to get involved and win points and prizes before the end of March.

What is the Big Energy Race?

The Big Energy Race is a national initiative to help communities get ‘energy-fit’: able to take control of their bills and reduce how much they are spending on energy – that’s what we mean by energy-fit! Community groups across the country sign up as ‘teams’, and compete with other groups around the UK in a race to accumulate points by promoting energy efficiency in the community. A team will encourage individuals to sign up as ‘team members’ and undertake household energy challenges, such as tracking their meter readings, turning down boiler thermostats or turning off appliances. The more team members each community group recruits and the more challenges that are undertaken, the more points the whole team earns. All the race resources will be accessible through www.bigenergyrace.org.

Big Energy Race: How it works

Big Energy Race: How it works

Who is the Big Energy Race for?

Big Energy Race may be for your community group if any of the following apply:

  • Your group aims to help people in your local area
  • You want to help local people save on their energy bills
  • You give one-to-one advice and support
  • You run a centre where people visit during the week
  • You want some ideas for activities to do in early 2015
  • You have some ideas for a local community energy project
  • You are planning events / activities in early 2015 where you could easily slot in some additional elements.

Why participate?

Apart from helping members in your community, you’ll also get a chance to:

  • Receive free training on how to engage members of your community
  • Compete for prizes
  • Get ideas for how you can save energy
  • Get access to fun, accessible and proven energy-saving resources and activities
  • Raise the profile of your community group through local press coverage
  • Your Big Energy Race team will earn points by completing actions. The more actions you take and the more team members complete them, the more points your team earns, increasing your chances of winning the weekly prizes: Team of the Week and Team Member of the Week. Your team can earn extra points by uploading blog posts, photos or videos showing your energy-saving activity.
  • One team will be crowned Big Energy Race Champions at the end, winning the overall prize. Whether you win or not, you will grow your group and have fun delivering vital support to people in your local community and helping them to stop losing money unnecessarily.
How can I get involved?

Sign up for the race here. You’ll just need to provide a few details – and The Big Energy Race team will be in touch with you to explain the next steps.

How much does it cost?

The Race is completely free – it’s been developed and delivered by environmental charity Global Action Plan with support from British Gas, EDF Energy, Green Energy and Npower.
