Around & About: Turning a life around

HOT’s Zelly Restorick recently read these words – from Leo Buscaglia – and wants to share them with you. Words that may resonate – as givers and receivers of loving, thoughtful, caring actions.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Leo Buscaglia

Back in the 70s in Southern California, Leo Buscaglia, (31 March 1924 – 11 June 1998), known affectionately as Dr Hug, taught the class, ‘Love 101’, teaching people how to love and be loved. Aware that people around him would think he was “nuts” (which some of the them did), he carried on, motivated by his belief that: “Love is certainly genetically inscribed, but it needs to be evoked, taught and practised if it is to have any real meaning”.

I know I am not alone in believing that sometimes, some of us, are valuing the wrong things: wealth, earning capacity, status, power, conflict, competition, etc. Yet qualities such as co-operation, collaboration, kindness, compassion, thoughtfulness, respect, integrity, playfulness and all with the spirit of love, are also necessary. More necessary maybe? Or at least equally vital to our lives.

“Only when we give joyfully, without hesitation or thought of gain, can we truly know what love means.”

 Leo F. Buscaglia

    LOVELY QUOTE!
THE LATE 60S AND EARLIER 70S WERE GREAT TIMES TO HUG, SHARE, LOVE, CARE – UNTIL PSYCHOLOGY/ PSYCHOTHERAPY CHANGED TO INTERNALIZE THE NEW IDEOLOGY OF NEOLIBERALSM: COMPETE, COMPETE “LOOK AFTER NUMBER ONE”…
