Anyone for tennis?
This Sunday, 26 May, The Green Lawn Tennis Club is having an Open Day. HOT’s Erica Smith had no idea there was a tennis club in St Leonards (and knows very little about tennis), so she interviewed club member and local resident, Louise Bell to find out more.
Q: Tell me a little bit about the Tennis Club?
The Green Lawn Tennis Club is in the heart of St Leonards, at 68–70 Tower Road West. It’s a lovely setting, surrounded by trees. Very green and peaceful – it deserves its name! It’s been there since 1924.
Q: How long have you been a member, and what made you join?
I’ve been a member for about 4 years now. I’d always regretted not learning to play tennis at school and wondered if I’d left it too late. I hadn’t – with a bit of coaching I think anyone could learn enough to be able to enjoy the game. Fortunately we have very good coaches at The Green, for either one-to-one lessons or group sessions which are good fun and cover tactics as well as technique. I also wanted to find a way of exercising outside and to get back into a sport rather than just doing solitary ‘fitness’ stuff like the gym or running.
Q: What are your favourite things about tennis/the club?
For me the best thing about the club is the convenience. I’m lucky – it’s right on my doorstep. But because we’ve got nine courts there’s pretty much always space to play and often people over there to play with. The best thing about tennis is when it goes right – the feeling of hitting a sweet forehand is very satisfying. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen that often…
Q: What is this ‘All Play’ Open Day on Sunday?
The Open Day on Sunday is designed to show local people that there’s an amazing resource here right under their noses. And that tennis really is a game for all ages and abilities. Our oldest active member is 92 and still plays several times a week. We also have a growing programme for children, including summer camps which are good fun for them and great for parents who want their children to be occupied doing something healthy and active during the long summer holidays…
People who come along on the day will be able to hit with our coach, find out about the club, enjoy a BBQ, and get 20% off if they join on the day.
Q: How do we find out more?
People who’re interested in finding out more or joining the club should visit the club website or call Phillip on 422025.
