Six-a-side football league needs you!
Are you and your mates looking to get a bit serious about your footie? The six-a-side leagues in Hastings and Rye start a new season in early February and are looking for new teams to get involved. Nick Terdre reports.
“We are desperately looking for new teams,” says Harry Stobert, league secretary of Football Mundial, a limited company which organises leagues in the shorter forms of football across the country. Matches are played on new Astroturf pitches – the Hastings League at Horntye Park Sports Complex on Wednesday evenings and the Rye League at Rye Leisure Centre on Thursday evenings. All standards are welcome, Harry says.
Each match, divided in two halves naturally, lasts 35 minutes. As the venues are affiliated to the Football Association, matches are officiated only by FA-qualified officials.
Each team pays a £30 match fee per game, but there is no affiliation fee or other expense, Harry says. And the first game is free. In return, Football Mundial undertakes to provide at least 10 games per season, but with both league games and a knock-out cup, most teams are likely to play well above that number.
These are men’s leagues’; although the profile of the women’s teams in the longer form of the game is rapidly rising, there are as yet no shorter form female leagues, nor does the FA permit mixed teams.
