Tressell’s Children

Acclaimed Hastings’ history experience Tressell’s Children returns for another limited run

Back by popular demand! Hastings’ immersive history experience, Tressell’s Children, returns for another limited season in the lead-up to Christmas at St Andrews Mews, Hastings. Earlier this year, MSL, local artists and the people of Hastings and St Leonards created Tressell’s Children, an immersive history experience that told the stories of Hastings people. The limited run in St Andrews Mews was a sell-out, and highly acclaimed success, so we’re doing another limited run, writes Kate Hodges

Enter the recently uncovered, secret space in St Andrews Mews for a spellbinding sound and art experience that tells the stories of Hastings’ people. Tressell’s Children draws links between the stories of life in the inter-war period and the earlier work of Robert Tressell, author of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists.

Child listening on headset

Put on a headset and be transported by the memories of men and women who grew up between the wars. See new research that’s uncovered fascinating new facts about our town, and enjoy art inspired by the real lives of everyday people.

The exhibition includes The Song of Shadows, a film by local filmmaker Rebecca Marshall, inspired by one of the oral history accounts.

It also draws on the brilliant new adaptation of the book as a graphic novel by Scarlett and Sophie Rickard and includes original works by Mary Hooper, Aram Zarikian and Susie Warren.

Through the curtain…

The exhibition takes place in the Beyond The Door Gallery (accessible through Mews Gallery One, upper floor at St Andrews Mews), St Andrews Mews, Waldegrave Street, Hastings, TN34 1SJ.

There’s also a chance to visit a new, virtual reality version of the exhibition. This accessible, 360 film experience recreates the exhibition in digital form with a few fresh, exciting twists.

Immerse yourself in the stories of Hastings’ people, told through audio pieces, art and film. The VR experience also includes previews of other works-in-progress by MSL.

The two exhibitions require separate tickets.
