Climate Emergency Banner
Lorna Vahey and Jen Painter are inviting all women and girls to contribute towards creating a banner depicting the crisis of endangered species from the comfort of your home. You don’t need to be an experienced needlewoman!
“You can participate by making a cloth square (or two) 5″×5” (12.7×12.7cms) with the name and hopefully an image of one of the many endangered species. To make it easier to handle when putting it all together the fabric should not be plastic. Allow for a hem of just under half an inch (1cm) and if you sew, turn under and tack down.
“We thought we’d keep to a colour scheme for the fabric, appropriate to the subject matter:
RANGE OF BLUES for the sky – for flying creatures.
DARKER BLUES for the sea/water – for those that swim.
BROWNS/GREENS – for those who live on land.
RED – for the extinct species
“Be as decorative as you like. Use applique (sewn on pieces of material), embroidery, wool, ribbon, string, beads, buttons, sequins or anything you have at home. Or you could use acrylic or fabric paint but not felt tip or biro as these fade quite quickly. And we’d rather you didn’t use glue.
“When we eventually emerge from our homes, all the squares thar you have made will be sewn together to hopefully make a rather splendid banner.
“If you want to get involved or need more info or advice, e-mail either
