Bottle In A Message

GLENN VENESS thinks Hastings should be re-branded as the Birthplace of Vision

Congratulations to everybody whose hard work has brought together Hastings Online Times. Ironically, I’ve got no computer, but what better excuse to visit friends. We’re always reminded that hastings is the “Birthplace of Television”, though with some of its content of late I get the feeling that John Logie Baird wouldn’t be too impressed.

I personally feel that “Birthplace of Vision” is more apt for Hastings and its townsfolk, especially in this age of our concern for our planet.

The forefather of conservation, “Grey Owl” alias Archibald Belaney was born in Hastings, and the founders of Green & Blacks organic chocolate reside in the High Street. I mean, our bins are even green and black, which shows how environmentally friendly our council must be?

Sadly though, and it is with regret that I say this, I am not the world’s No.1 eco warrior. I know that may be as hard to swallow as the muesli you’re eating as you read my admission, but that’s it. But before going with HOT into cyberspace I have to point out that this is a personal confession.

I know only too well the effects such a statement can have, as I lost a really good friend because of it. He felt I wasn’t doing my bit for the ozone layer because I let the tap run when I clean my teeth, and then seemed to take offence when I asked if he did the same when visiting his holiday home in France once a month. Some people just have no sense of humour.

As it happens I do have an idea that all you HOT readers can do, which will surely save the planet.

I recently had a birthday, and a couple of presents, the only two in fact, came in those lovely gift bags you can buy nowadays. What I did was put an envelope in them both with my name, the date received and the occasion which it celebrated written on a piece of paper. I then used these bags again and sent them to two other friends. They did the same, and so began a chain which could possibly circumnavigate the earth.

It saves on wrapping paper and cellotape and one can only imagine what stories each bag will hold. These details could even go online so you could check on the journey of your bag and what countries it may have visited or what famous or interesting people may have revceived it. A modern day message in a bottle so to speak, or maybe bottle in a message?

If all you readers did this we could start a trend that began in Hastings with the launch of HOT, so enhancing our reputation as a Town of Vision. And the oldest bags would always come from Hastings…
