Chapman Brothers to exhibit at Jerwood

The contest to match ten major artists with ten museum and gallery events for Museums at Night 2013 saw 38 venues compete for a cast of ten including Jake and Dinos Chapman, Martin Creed, Gavin Turk and Richard Wentworth, write HOT’s Joe Fearn.

More than 30,000 votes were cast in the competition to send ten artists to ten venues for Museums at Night in May 2013.

The public response to the online ballot on Culture24 surpassed last year’s Connect10 competition, with several venues cruising past 1,500 votes to secure some very special Museums at Night events for the weekend of May 16-18.

In one of the competition’s closest votes, 1,590 voters captured the Chapman Brothers for the Jerwood Gallery in their former hometown of Hastings, where – HOT can reveal – a daytime session for families will be followed by a masked evening art event for adults. The brothers will be on hand to choose key pieces from the collection. Full details of the event and how to book will be announced shortly.

Jerwood Gallery won with 43% of the vote, securing the artists for a special day and evening of activities on Saturday 18 May, during the Museums at Night festival weekend.

Liz Gilmore, Director of the Jerwood Gallery says: “We are thrilled to have won this opportunity to host a day of activities with the Chapman Brothers. Every vote really did count and we are so grateful for all of our supporters, who took the time to vote for us.

“Jerwood has long admired the Chapman Brothers and we are looking forward to bringing two of Hastings most well-known exports back home for a very special evening, which promises to surprise and delight. We would also like to offer our congratulations to the nine other winning venues who will be hosting artists such as Martin Creed, Gavin Turk and Richard Wentworth”

Jake and Dinos Chapman have a close association with Hastings. They grew up in the area and attended William Parker School and Hastings College. The Turner Prize-nominated artists then went on to study at the Royal College of Art, and worked as assistants to British artists Gilbert and George. Their iconoclastic sculptures, paintings, prints and large-scale installations draw on confrontational imagery to question standards of politics, political correctness and obscenity in witty and frequently shocking ways: in the past they have reworked Goya etchings and watercolours by Hitler.
