Hastings Hatters at the Kave Gallery

In 1934, the Hat Council produced an advertising poster declaring ‘If you want to get ahead, GET A HAT!’ A forthcoming show at the Kave Gallery will help you do just that – in true style! – when local milliners, Francis Fifi Hats, Anais Neon, Tilly Bea and Louise Papier-Mache Cousin, display their art from June 1 for two weeks. HOT reporter Cathy Simpson finds out more…

The work here really belongs in an art gallery – it cuts across boundaries of art, design and fashion, shows hats made from unusual materials, explores cutting-edge techniques – and is utterly beautiful.

Francis Fifi Hats

Francis Fifi Hats

Bevali – who is HOT’s very own ‘Style’ columnist and founder of Francis Fifi Hats, uses traditional millinery techniques alongside her own. She is influenced by vintage design and has made hats for over 20 years;  they have been sold around the world. Making hats makes Bevali happy – and her wearers are happy too!  You can see more of her work here.

Anais Neon

Anais Neon

Anais Neon makes things for your head. Anais, aka Jane Caley, produces beautiful quirky headpieces reminiscent of Japanese flower arranging.

At the moment Jane is busy supporting OMD on tour, as she is not only a talented milliner but a singer. She makes her own costumes for performances with the Vile Electrodes and will be showing some of the head wear worn on her recent tour of Germany.

Her Facebook page is here.

Tilly Bea crochets whimsical characters and woollen treats for your head. She has been making things with her magic crochet needles since childhood and finds it difficult to stop thinking about and creating new things daily.

Loulou Cousin

Louise Papier-Maché Cousin is a papier maché genius; she can make almost anything in this material, including huge brothel creepers, a giant teapot and even a mini welsh dresser. These pieces aren’t just hats – they’re magical cranial sculptures!
