Fat Tuesday: last two days

Following a busy weekend schedule in which the sun shone on the Umbrella Parade, many enjoyed the Preservation Sunday music and beer festival at St Mary in the Castle, not to mention the Off Axis sets played by up-and-coming bands at the Carlisle, while yet others enjoyed the way-out sounds and performances of Sonic Sunday in St Leonards, culminating in something really different at a secret location skilfully disguised beneath a garage, Fat Tuesday moves into its final two days. Here be the word from the website.

Monday 16 February

Un-Convention St Mary in the Castle,  Monday (and Tuesday), 10am to 6pm

This is an international music industry seminar which is being held for the first time in Hastings. Among the speakers is co-founder Jeff Thompson, who runs a number of independent record labels in Manchester. There’s a long line-up of figures from the industry – bands, producers, venue managers, journalists, managers and others – for this two-day event.

The programme includes panel discussions and break-out sessions on a wide range of topics, including building a career in music, the art of song-writing, promotion strategies and, on Tuesday, a guitar masterclass by Ace of Skunk Anansie.

Entry £10 for one day and £15 for both. Tickets from The Crown, All Saints Street, the St Leonard, London Road, and Substance, Robertson Street, or via the website.

A chance to take a breather and meet the Fat Tuesday musicians ‘off duty’ and also the team behind the festival. The music comes in the form of roots and blues from King Size Slim, whose popularity is growing fast. Last year he released his first studio album, Milk Drunk, picked up the inaugural Emerging Artist British Blues Award and opened for Queen at a New Year’s Eve concert in Westminster Hall, London.

Tuesday 17 February – Fat Tuesday!

Fat Tuesday Tour 8-11pm

On the Fat Tuesday Fringe there will be live music and DJs at another 10 venues: the Stag, Duke of Wellington, the London Trader, The Crown, the Black Pearl, Latham’s, Ye Olde Pump House, The Anchor, Whistle Trago and Pomegranate.

Aftershow Parties 10pm-3am

Two of them this year, at West Exit and Brass Monkey. High-calibre guest musicians and DJs will ensure the festival goes out on a high – prepare to dance yourself into the small hours!
