An evening in with…Fanya Lin
This Friday evening, 5 June, Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition prizewinner Fanya Lin will join us for a live performance of beautiful music, writes Chris Cormack.
The twelfth in this series of short online concerts presented by Hastings International Piano is given by 2018 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition finalist Fanya Lin.
Programme:
Robert Schumann Fantasie Op. 17 – in loose sonata form, generally described as one of Schumann’s greatest works for solo piano
Lowell Liebermann Gargoyles Op. 29 – “a striking work calling for the full dynamic range of the piano.”
Fanya Lin from Taiwan was a top prizewinner in the 2018 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, the New York International Piano Competition, the Concours International de Piano France-Amériques and the Seattle International Piano Competition.

Fanya played Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the Hastings final and was depicted as “an ethereal woman whose ruffled dress made her resemble a delicate black swan.” In a previous round, playing Rachmaninov, her “mesmerizing performance” made it appear as though “a tornado had touched down through her body and lifted her, feathers fluttering, from the piano stool as she weighed into the keys”.
Described as a “striking interpreter” who gives a “committed and heartfelt performance” by Musical America and The New York Times, pianist Fanya Lin has captivated audiences worldwide with her charismatic and gripping performances. In Autumn 2019, Dr Fanya Lin joined the faculty at University of Arizona in Tucson as an Assistant Professor of Music in Piano.
In these times when the livelihood of our musicians is at risk, this series supports the careers of HIPCC prizewinners and, of course, they receive a performance fee.
The concerts are free to view, but viewers are able to make a voluntary donation to Hastings International Piano Engagement Fund, or choose to join as a Friend.
Watch live here (the video will appear just before 8pm on Friday 5 June) or by visiting the Facebook page.
