Hastings Rocks Film Festival 2022

Marvel at a diverse selection of films of all genres, including films made in Hastings, and short and feature films that push boundaries, at this weekend’s Hastings Rocks Film Festival, says Annie Waite.

Hastings Rocks Film Festival is an exciting three-day event of award-winning indie films made by local and international directors. The programme includes short and feature-length films and documentaries of electric styles and genres (art film, comedy, drama, horror, and more). Screenings will take place jointly at the Electric Palace and St Mary in the Castle.

Hastings Rocks Film Festival is an exciting new addition to Rocks Film Festivals, which exhibit films in Brighton, London and Los Angeles made by talented independent filmmakers of all walks of life.

In keeping with Hastings’ rich culture and heritage, the festival will have a special emphasis on films that explore esoteric and mystical themes, as well as movies shot in Hastings.

The Camping Trip feature screens at Electric Palace on Friday 22 April

Highlights of the festival this year include:

Camping Trip by Demian & Léonardo Fuica: Screening at Electric Palace cinema on Friday 22 April at 6.30pm, plus a Q&A with the directors.

In the summer of 2020, two couples go on a remote camping trip after months of a mandatory COVID -19 lockdown. At a nearby drop-off point, two goons decide to go rogue, inadvertently implicating the unwitting campers. What started as a fun-filled vacation turns into a test of loyalty and survival. Suddenly, the pandemic is the least of their worries.

Re: A Pier by Archie Lauchlan: Screening at St Mary in the Castle on Saturday 23 April 2022 at 6-8pm.
Includes welcome address by the Mayor of Hastings and Q&A with filmmakers.

BAFTA award-winning director Archie Lauchlan moved to Hastings in 2006 and started filming its rundown, quirky pier. Two weeks later, the pier was declared structurally unsafe and shut down; in 2010 it was very nearly destroyed by fire. Re: A Pier is the result of Archie spending 10 years documenting Hastings Pier and its incredible pop history, along with its decades of decline and stunning community-led salvation. His close relationship with the pier and all its people forms the spine of this life-affirming documentary (featuring Jo Brand, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, The Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock, Marsha Hunt, Poly Styrene and Doon Mackichan).
