David Quantick hosts Summer Music Season 2023 at Electric Palace Cinema
See music-themed films at the Electric Palace throughout the summer, says Annie Waite, with Q&As and bands featured including King Crimson, The Police, The Black Angels, Spacemen 3, Tina Turner, punk icons The Slits and The Raincoats, and the female sound pioneer, Delia Derbyshire.
“The Electric Palace Summer Music Season is a glorious festival where music meets cinema and everybody wins,” says music journalist, author, and Emmy-award winner, David Quantick about Summer Music Season, which began in 2013.
Coming up during the rest of the season you can enjoy special guest Q&As from film directors, and live musical performances from Aylin Leclaire and the Hastings Punk Choir.
Volcanic eruptions and squabbling
This weekend is the screening of Under the Volcano, in which tells the story of George Martin’s groundbreaking remote Montserrat Caribbean island recording studio, which lay under the shadow of an active volcano, and attracted the world’s biggest recording artists during the MTV era.
With Sting, Mark Knopfler, Stewart Copeland, and Nick Rhodes featured, in Under the Volcano you can learn about how the studio formed the backdrop to monumental events in music history including the break-up of The Police, the reunion of The Rolling Stones, and the reinvigoration of Paul McCartney after the tragic murder of John Lennon.
“Almost 40 years later, it’s hilarious to see Stewart Copeland speak of Sting with still-fresh feelings of exasperation, irritation and admiration,” says the New York Times of Under the Volcano.
After a decade of hits, and at the peak of its popularity, the studio was destroyed when the island was hit by a series of devastating natural disasters.
Use it or lose it: Support your local cinema
“We’re excited to share another packed Summer Music Season of fascinating and entertaining films spanning a wide cross section of musical tastes,” says Annie Mannion, Electric Palace Co-Director.
“So please do come along to support The Electric Palace as, like many other independent cinemas, we really need your continued support to be able to carry on in what continues to be a very challenging time for the industry. There are so many great events to choose from, so there’s something for everyone,” Annie continues.
Last week, as part of Summer Music Season, David Quantick spoke to director Toby Amies during a live Q&A at the Electric Palace following a screening of In the Court of the Crimson King, a film about rock band King Crimson:
