Our Town: A Pledge To The Land And The Sea

As part of this year’s Coastal Currents Festival, a book will be created, pledging how we as a whole town will change part of our lifestyle to protect and preserve the environment and acknowledge our impact upon it. Juliet Russell writes.

We would love everyone in the community to come & write one sentence in the book, saying how they will help the environment.

Please help to spread the word!

From 1 – 15 September, pages of the book will be available for you to write in at the following locations:

Nelson Antiques: 80 High St, Old Town.

St Marys Castle Café: 7 Pelham Place.

Omega Studio: 14 Grand Parade.

The book will then be bound and illustrated by celebrated local artists and housed in Hastings and then the Fisherman’s  Museum.

PLEASE BECOME A PLEDGE AMBASSADOR

WE ARE ASKING EACH OF YOU TO VOLUNTEER AND BE AMBASSADORS FOR THE PLEDGE PROJECT.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS  TAKE A FEW PAGES OF LINED A4 PAPER  EVERYWHERE WITH YOU AND ASK EVERYONE TO SIGN  THE PLEDGE – & INCLUDE IN ONE SENTENCE HOW THEY WILL REDUCE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.

EACH  AMBASSADOR IS ASKED TO AIM TO GET OVER 50 PLEDGES AND SIGNATURES

WILL YOU HELP?

You can contact us at vocalexplosion100@gmail.com or drop your signed pages into any of the three outlets (named above), where the pledge can also be signed.

Call out to schools, community groups and businesses

The Pledge Project has no funding, so we need as much support as possible for all sectors of the community to become involved.

As well as individuals, we would also love all schools, community groups & businesses in the Hastings and Rother area to add to the Town’s Pledge by creating their own books, where every pupil, teacher, employee and employer, etc will have the opportunity to write a sentence saying how they will reduce their impact upon the environment.

The book doesn’t have to be costly to create: it could be sewn together or a box folder could be used with the signed papers inside – and beautifully decorated on the outside  by the school pupils or group members.

We will then invite all schools & groups to present – or hand over their book beforehand – at the 20 September ceremony on the Ladies Parlour on the West Hill, where you can watch the sunset and be wooed by beautiful music. After the ceremony, the books will be given back to the schools & groups for their own archives. Towards the end of the gathering, we will circle the hill as custodians to this land and sea.

This project has been created by Juliet Russell, whose music in the landscape has been heard globally from the National Theatre roof, castles and football stadiums, to sites of the Ancient Mayan.
