Claudia de Grandi and Tymon Dogg celebrate the moon
This Saturday at 6pm in A Wave of Dreams gallery in Kings Road, St Leonards, there will be a remarkable collaboration to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the first moon landing. Painter Claudia de Grandi and violinist Tymon Dogg plan to improvise together – mixing paint and music. HOT’s Erica Smith tunes in to the moonscapes.
Known primarily for the lucidly evocative, large scale minimalist paintings launched at her 2018 exhibitions in Milan and London, Claudia de Grandi’s oeuvre also extends to performance works where her live action, calligraphic brushwork is paired in a dialogue with a solo musician in an interactive improvisation.
She notably created her seminal work Visual Sounds with the American musician Joshua Tennent in a series of gallery and art fair performances in Berlin, London, Kyoto and Tokyo to much interest and critical approval.

As a part of De Grandi’s current exhibition Blue Moon showing in the gallery until 12 July, A Wave of Dreams Arts Lab is proud to premier this specially created piece made in collaboration with renowned violinist Tymon Dogg who came to fame during the first wave of punk and has forged an inimitable career as a multi-instrumentalist, combining punk, folk and experimentation.
De Grandi’s explorations within the genre of painting as performance are relevant to an appreciation of her art, as is her work with musician collaborators where specially composed music is combined with sequences of paintings and film to remarkable effect.
As a Brazilian modernist artist who also trained as a classical musician, De Grandi uses the various media of painting, film, photography and music as intertwined elements in her evolving work.
A major sequence of her paintings now in preparation for a large scale exhibition in 2020 will feature her ongoing series Waves & Horizons presented as part of an immersive soundscape at Fabbrica del Vapore Arts Centre in Milan.
The performance is at 6pm this Saturday (6 July) at A Wave of Dreams Arts Lab, 48 Kings Road, St Leonards-on-Sea, TN37 6DY
