The White Rock Theatre is re-opening its doors with an impressive range of live entertainment for the people of Hastings and beyond, writes HOT’s Paul Way-Rider. Here’s a look at some of the shows coming up soon and later in the year.
The Drifters – Sat 4 September 7.30pm
Following their successful recent tour, which included dates at London’s Royal Albert Hall and arenas around the UK, The Drifters are back on tour in the UK with a brand-new show performing all their classic hits from the last six decades. The legendary group have previously been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, listed among the Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine and have produced an incredible list of hits, including Saturday Night at the Movies, Come on Over to My Place, Stand By Me and Under the Boardwalk.
Shalamar – Tues 14 September 7.30pm
Shalamar, featuring Howard Hewett, Jeffrey Daniel and Carolyn Griffey, come to Hastings on the UK tour of Shalamar Songbook Tour 2020 with special guest Phil Fearon. As Shalamar, Howard and Jeffrey sold over 25 million records worldwide. Their live show includes multi- million selling hits, such as A Night To Remember, I Can Make You Feel Good, Make That Move, There It Is, Dead Giveaway, I Owe You One and The Second Time Around.
Showstopper! The Improvised Musical –

With twelve years as an Edinburgh Fringe must-see phenomenon, a BBC Radio 4 series, a critically acclaimed West End run and an Olivier Award to their name, The Showstoppers have delighted audiences across the globe with their ingenious blend of comedy, musical theatre and spontaneity. A brand new musical comedy is created from scratch at each performance of this award-winning show as audience suggestions are transformed on the spot into all-singing, all-dancing productions with hilarious results.
Ben Fogle – Tales from the Wilderness –
Fri 24 September 7.30pm
Thrilling tales from a modern-day explorer. From crossing Antarctica to conquering Everest, Ben Fogle will take the audience on an inspiring adventure. Join Ben in this uplifting and exciting show, when he’ll be sharing his stories of the wilderness. Ben has climbed Everest, been swimming with crocodiles, saved elephants, dodged pirates, been marooned for a year on an uninhabited island, walked to the South Pole, crossed the Empty Quarter with camels, rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, tracked the migration of the wildebeest, swum from Alcatraz, had a flesh-eating disease and messed around with ferrets!
John Bishop – Right Here, Right Now –
Wed 27 October 8pm
Comedy superstar John Bishop is coming to Hastings with his highly anticipated brand-new stand-up show, Right Here, Right Now.
This will be John’s eighth stand-up show and it is shaping up to be his best yet. It will see him performing across the UK, Ireland, America, Canada and Europe.
Wet Wet Wet – Sun 7 November 7.30pm
Wet Wet Wet are one of the most successful bands in British pop history, selling in excess of 15m singles and albums to date. The band has featured in the UK official singles and album charts for over 500 weeks. With number 1 hits including With A Little Help From My Friends and Goodnight Girl, 1994’s Love Is All Around was the biggest selling single of the year, when it spent 15 weeks at No 1, making it the longest spell at the top for any UK artist – a record that still stands.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show –
Tues 23 and Wed 24 November, 1.30pm and 5pm
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by author/illustrator Eric Carle, has delighted generations of readers since it was first published in 1969, selling more than 43m copies worldwide. The timeless classic has made its way off the page and onto the stage.
Created by Jonathan Rockefeller, the critically acclaimed production of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show features a menagerie of 75 lovable puppets, faithfully adapting four of Eric Carle’s stories, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, The Very Lonely Firefly and of course, the star of the show The Very Hungry Caterpillar who celebrated its 50th birthday in 2019.
Tropicana Nights – Fri 3 December 7.30pm
Tropicana Nights brings you ‘The Ultimate 80s Party Night’ with special guest DJ Pat Sharp.
The White Rock provides a fantastic unique 80s themed venue and a friendly party atmosphere. Whether you go all-out in your favourite 80s outfit or not, you are guaranteed to get in the party mood as soon as you walk into the room!
