We need global warming like a fish needs a bicycle
In response to the G7 Summit taking place in Cornwall this week, XR Hastings and St Leonards (XRHSL) is holding an action on the beach down from Bottle Alley on Thursday 10 June at 4.30pm, to highlight their concern at the government’s continued lack of action with regard to the climate crisis. HOT’s Erica Smith will be with the chapter of cyclists supporting the action.
Having declared a climate emergency in April 2019 – after the first XR Rebellion – the government has continued with the building of HS2, given the go-ahead for a coal mine in Cumbria and committed £27bn to road building. XR does not feel that this demonstrates a commitment to change or their demands to both “Tell the truth” and “Act now!”
The action on the beach is part of a national coastal action entitled ‘Drowning in Promises’ which starts in Scotland and continues on to Cornwall, where XR Cornwall rebels will be bringing these issues to the attention of those attending the summit. The XRHSL action is part of the XR South East initiative which is being launched in Hastings and will continue on to Brighton. XR rebels are particularly concerned as a coastal town with rising sea levels and the implications it will have for all who live here. The Climate Crisis may seem as something distant right now, but it is already happening elsewhere. In ten years, Hastings could be under water!
XRHSL ask that you come and join in with their nautically themed action on the beach and let both the council and government know your concerns. The action will be taking place at 4.30pm in order to encourage families to come and join in.
Cyclists who wish to be part of the event are encouraged to dress in a nautically themed manner and meet at The Stade at 4pm. They will cycle slowly along the cycle path to the prom above Bottle Alley and support the XR gathering along the shore.
