Community Project Award for Bike Lab
Local community group Bike Lab Hastings were shortlisted in in the Best Community Project category for Cycling UK’s 2018 Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Bike Lab Hastings is a brilliant community bicycle workshop, which has been running every Wednesday evening for over six years. Their mission is to promote cycling culture in Hastings and St Leonards. They run a free-to-access, volunteer run, donation funded weekly workshop providing access to skills, advice, recycled spare parts and tools. The project encourages a D.I.Y skill sharing culture for those who wish to learn and contribute.
Bike Lab Hastings are open to anyone and have helped 4 – 80 year olds, from lifetime locals to recent immigrants and refugees. Since 2012 they have refurbished over 700 donated bikes, helped more than 1,000 people to maintain their own bikes, and provided over 1,200 volunteer mechanic hours. They regularly have 20 or more people turn up on Wednesday evenings during the summer to use the workshop and volunteer at the project.
The project is open every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 8pm and is located on the lower promenade in front of Warrior Square. See Bike Lab & Facebook Bike Lab for more information. For more information about the award, read this article in Cycling UK.
