Monumental: exhibition by Katherine Reekie
Katherine Reekie is an extremely talented fine artist, living and working in Hastings, an environment she feels is rich in contrasts and eccentricities and the inspiration for much of her work. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked her about her latest exhibition, Monumental, at Hastings Arts Forum in St Leonards on Sea.
Originally from London, Katherine studied fine art at Camberwell School of Art, before moving to Hastings.
“My imagery, which is often described as accessible but slightly unnerving, is the product of an excellent grounding in traditional figurative art practise, and an interest in the surreal,” writes Katherine.
“Like props on a stage I arrange my subject matter to evoke a sense of order and purpose. Strange structures pinned and pulled, interact with organic matter to create intriguing and seductive compositions. My intention is not to depict reality but to nudge people to question and consider it.”
“Monumental is a solo art exhibition of surreal landscape paintings and drawings. This collection of recent and past works explores our fascination with the monumental. From standing stones to topiary, the world is covered in impressive examples of humanity’s ability to create art in the landscape. I present a series of imagined scenes that explore the strange and powerful effect that scale and environment have on our perception.
Monumental: an exhibition by Katherine Reekie 4 – 16 September.
Preview evening Friday 7 September from 6.30pm – 8.30 pm.
Hastings Arts Forum, 36 Marina, St Leonards on Sea, TN38 0BU. Opening Times: Tuesday – Sunday, 11am – 5pm
