Thee Sunday Sonics hit the America Ground

On Sunday 26 February the America Ground quarter of Hastings will play host to the official Hastings Fat Tuesday alternative. Thee Sunday Sonics is now in its third year and kicking. HOT’s Nick Weekes has emerged from a dusty bunker to offer this preview…

Formerly a fringe event, curated by Danny Pockets to reflect the Old Town focused festival, it proved successful and it’s now an acknowledged part of Hastings Fat Tuesday.

This year James Wvr and Danny Pockets have curated and produced “an afternoon of Sonic and visual joy”. That is, a lineup of jazz/electronic/psychedelic/poetry/just plain weird music and video art for the curious, adventurous and open-minded. If this is something you might find interesting or pleasurable, I strongly suggest you come along.

The fun begins at Borough Wines, 34 Robertson St with video and sound installations and a small stage with a mix of live music and poetry throughout the afternoon from 1-4pm. Slow Listener, Gareth E Rees, Port & Starboard, Jude Cowan Montague, Jason Williams and Jeffery Lewis Reed plus more to be announced.

Moving to The Printworks at 6pm, the first live set starts shortly afterwards. Things get louder and more colourful. Three video screens, and a roving analogue projectionist are promised. Music from Map71, Cutlasses, Grassy Noel & Ape with Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston, Leyden Jars and Native Ray.

Both events are free admission and both offer excellent refreshments (Borough Wines – an emporium of gorgeous beers, wines and books – and Printworks bars on upper and lower levels).

For a taste of the wilder side of the Hastings music scene, you can’t do better than this.
