Farewell to Hilary Davan Wetton
St Mary-in-the-Castle will resound to a fine period instrument band with three baroque trumpets and the voices of Hastings Philharmonic Choir, directed for the last time by its charismatic conductor Hilary Davan Wetton on Saturday 16 June at 7.30pm.
The concert, called ‘the Honour of a Jubilee’, will be an evening of beautiful music, much of it composed for and used on royal occasions. Purcell’s ‘Come ye Sons of Art’ was the centrepiece of Queen Mary’s birthday celebrations in 1694, and Handel’s well known Coronation Anthems were composed for the coronations of George II and Queen Caroline, and the concert starts joyfully with Boyce’s tuneful fifth symphony.
Soloists Juliet Fraser and Johnny Herford, both acclaimed here recently, are joined by counter- tenor John Lattimore in the programme of baroque masterpieces. Three further pieces from Purcell begin the second half in suitably reflective mood – for it will be a poignant occasion for both choir and audience as Hilary takes his leave of Hastings.
Reserve tickets, £15 and £10 for this special farewell concert at the Box Office (01424 552119)
