Am I the only one to think that voting with a pencil is a strange phenomenon? writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick. When I voted, I pressed very hard with my pencil, making a chunky cross in the box, as my mind wandered off and pondered the possible use of erasers!
Subsequent research suggests that pencils aren’t used in every voting area around the UK – and we all have the right to use whatever writing implement we choose.

Perhaps they could have a hole punch to select the candidate. The papers could then be counted electronically and there would be no chance of changing the vote

Yes, I thought about this in the polling booth. I tried not to be slightly paranoid about it, but there seems to have been an increase in voting “irregularities” in recent years so that feeling persisted at the time. I think only a pen should be provided, and used, by law. Oh, and I certainly wouldn’t trust any “technological” method of voting – online, smartphones etc.- it’s an invitation to a fraudfest.
