Mayor on peace duty

Mayor Kim Forward and Deputy Mayor Alan Roberts visited Grosvenor House Care Home to mark the International Day of Peace on 21 September. As members of the Mayors for Peace movement, ratified by Hastings Borough Council, they spoke to the residents about this cause and its non party political contribution to peace.

Local peace campaigners Hiromi Goldman and Fiona MacGregor also talked about the Peace One Day organisation which encouraged the UN to adopt the first Peace Day in 2001. Each 21 September the Peace Bell at UN Headquarters in New York City, cast from coins donated by children from all continents, is rung.

The Mayors for Peace movement was established in 1982 by the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  The movement, which became a non governmental organisation in 1991, now counts on 5,003 member cities in 151 countries.
