Hastings United relegated
Hastings United’s eight-year spell in the Ryman Premier League came to a sad end last night, 25 April, away to East Thurrock United. Hastings lost the match 1-0 but the only game they were relying on was fellow-strugglers Wingate & Finchley, who are also fighting relegation, writes football correspondent Liam Willis.
Hosting Lowestoft, who are second in the Ryman Premier League, Wingate & Finchley pulled off a shock 3-2 win against the promotion-hopefuls, which increased their survival chances but abolished Hastings United’s.
The goals over the course of the evening saw United saved when Lowestoft were winning, relegated when Wingate took the lead, saved when Lowestoft equalised at 2-2 and finally relegated when Wingate grabbed the winning goal.
Despite a marvellous FA Cup run, United’s season has been full of ups-and-downs, as you can see from my previous report ‘Belief in the beautiful game.’ But lack of league form saw them drop points in the table and drop places.
United will play in the Ryman League South next season, against the likes of Sussex rivals Eastbourne Town, Horsham and Tooting & Mitcham United. They have one more game in the Ryman Premier League, this Saturday against Kingstonian. Come to cheer your local team over the final hurdle at the Pilot Field – kick off is 3pm.
