Art exhibition and Easter Day fun at Alexandra Park greenhouse
VISITORS can help celebrate World Earth Day at a special art exhibition to be held in the Alexandra Park greenhouse in conjunction with Art in the Park on Saturday 26 April. Separately volunteers at the greenhouse will also provide Easter Day activities for families on Sunday 20th. Lynda Foy describes the upcoming events.
An art exhibition will be held on Saturday 26 April at the Alexandra Park greenhouse off St Helen’s Road to celebrate World Earth Day. Opening at 10.30am, it will feature works by children from the YoYo Club, a creative family art group run by Art in the Park on the park’s former bowling green. The show, organised with the help of Arts on Prescription, will run alongside the greenhouse’s regular plant sales, and admission is free.

Earth Day on April 22 aims to encourage people to unite behind the drive for renewable energy and to work towards tripling the global generation of green energy. This year’s theme is Our Power, Our Planet, with about one billion people in 193 countries taking part.
Volunteers at Alexandra Park Greenhouse, off St Helens Road, will also showcase their sustainable projects and future plans.
Innovations at the greenhouse include a water cart which means the end of using hoses to water plants, removing a trip hazard for both volunteers and visitors. The Learning to Grow Group, a sub group of Transition Town Hastings, gave the greenhouse a £500 donation towards the cart.
The greenhouse’s horticultural team researched how they could economically continue to propagate and overwinter plants in the unheated greenhouse. Thanks to advice from greenhouse patron Fergus Garrett, head gardener at Great Dixter, and Tom Brown, head gardener at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, volunteers invested £200 in a heated seed propagation bench. The bench will allow more stock plants and seeds to be grown, reducing mileage and costs.
Future plans include a grey water filtration system. It will feature a double sink and electric water heater in the propagation area for handwashing hygiene and pot washing. There will be a filter system to treat the greenhouse’s waste water.
Easter Day fun
FAMILIES are invited to share in some fun-filled activities at Alexandra Park Greenhouse on Easter Sunday, 20 April.
Volunteers at the community hub will provide plenty for children to enjoy, from planting seeds to getting their hands dirty to make nature-inspired gifts. There might even be some chocolate!
The Easter Fun Day starts at 11am and continues all day. Admission is free, so just call in and enjoy the festivities.
Art in the Park Easter Picnic
There will also be fun to be had on Saturday 19 April from 12 to 4pm when Art in the Park holds its annual Easter Picnic event. Activities include Face Painting, Mr Punch&Judy, The Punk Choir and Hastings Ukulele Band, as well as arts and crafts stalls and an Easter Parade.
