The Lair of the White Worm

Based on the novel by Bram Stoker, join us for Ken Russell’s most unhinged (and most fun) film, starring Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi in early roles.

Director: Ken Russell

93 mins / 1988 / UK

Join Strange Frames for a film that truly embodies the label ‘strange frames’.

‘Enfant Terrible’ Ken Russell’s gothic supernatural horror-comedy is both deranged and delightful. Expect stunning location shooting in the heart of the midlands, haunting synth music, some pretty nightmarish dream sequences, erotic dancing, wild editing decisions, brutal practical effects, thigh high boots, and the desecration of religious iconography (the hallmark of any Ken Russell movie).

When a young archaeologist Angus Flint (Peter Capaldi) discovers a large and inexplicable skull he and his acquaintances investigate the possible existence of the legendary Lambton Worm, a mythical beast supposedly slain generations ago by the ancestor of the current Lord D’Ampton (Hugh Grant). When a stunning but predatory Lady Sylvia Marsh (Amanda Donohoe) takes an interest in both Flint and innocent local girl Eve, an unexpected peril sssslithers their way…

This screening kick-starts our Cult Cinema Weekender – a celebration of strange and wonderful supernatural films as part of Hastings’s Jack in the Green mayday celebrations!
