The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s masterpeice comes back to the big screen in 4k for the next edition of Fright Night

Director: Stanley Kubrick

119 mins / 1980 / USA

A brilliant 4k transfer of Kubrick’s horror masterpiece and The Overlook Hotel looks better than ever, with the Gold Room a particular standout. We are excited to screen this new extended 4K cut, which was the original US version of the film. As frightening as it ever was.

Jack Torrance accepts a caretaker job at the Overlook Hotel, where he, along with his wife Wendy and their son Danny, must live isolated from the rest of the world for the winter. But they aren’t prepared for the madness that lurks within. Starring incredible performances by Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall in career-defining roles.

We also take this opportunity to celebrate the life of Shelley Duvall who died last year at the age of 75 famous for her roles in Nashville, Annie Hall and The Shining.

When Robert Altman remarked that “I knew you were good, but I didn’t know you were great.” She said that remark was “the reason I stuck with it and became an actress”. Her best-known role was Wendy, the wife of Jack Nicholson’s terrifying hotel caretaker in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic The Shining. Filming was an ordeal. “I had to cry 12 hours a day, all day long, the last nine months straight, five or six days a week,” she once recalled.
