Much to enjoy at the greenhouse group’s Christmas market
There will be festive cheer and celebration for the achievements of the past year at Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group’s Christmas Market, as Lynda Foy explains.
Festive songs from carol singers will bring a merry start to a Christmas Market in December.
Ye Old Victorian Carol Singers will perform at Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group’s event at the site off St Helens Road, Hastings, on Saturday 14 December.
The choir, which was formed 14 years ago, will start singing when the fair opens at 10.30am, then move to the nearby Pump House Cafe, before returning to the greenhouse until noon.
A highlight of the event, which runs until 4pm, will be Hastings author Ed Boxall, who will be selling copies of his latest children’s story book, Umpkin, along with greetings cards and prints. Ed launched his new book at the greenhouse on 31 October during the site’s Halloween celebrations.
Other attractions will be stalls selling soaps, hand creams, candles, scarves, hats and gloves, art and ceramics. Volunteers will also be selling plants, and donations of plants will be welcome. Admission is free.
£8,000 donation
Earlier in November the group received an £8,000 donation from Morrison’s, part of the supermarket’s 100th anniversary celebrations, to install new railings at the greenhouse.
Davina Pennington, Morrison’s community champion, said the money came from the Morrison Foundation which supports charities and worthy causes in the community. “This greenhouse is of historical value and it’s a shame to lose these things,” she said.
Volunteers of the Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group have worked hard over recent years to restore the greenhouse, which had been left in a dilapidated state. Back in pristine state, it now serves as a community hub.
Recently the group was also presented with a cheque for £100 by Hastings Borough Bonfire Society at the Fisherman’ Social Club in the Old Town.
The greenhouse is available for hire for talks, workshops, exhibitions and other events. Contact social@our-greenhouse.org for details.
