Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger
A love letter from Martin Scorsese to cinema and two of the most iconic and enduring filmmakers to come out of the UK.
Director: David Hinton
131 mins / 2024 / UK
Martin Scorsese celebrates the enduring legacy of visionary writer-directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger – two of British cinema’s greatest filmmakers.
With a treasure trove of clips and rare archival footage, Scorsese investigates the duo’s bold genius and colossal impact on cinema history. We are delighted to screen this amazing documentary featuring rare archival material from the personal collections of Powell, Pressburger and Scorsese – a follow up to last year’s Powell and Pressburger BFI season and long-awaited collaboration with Powell’s editor and widow, Thelma Schoonmaker.
Martin Scorsese first encountered the films of Powell and Pressburger when he was a child, sitting in front of the family TV. When their famous logo came up on screen, Scorsese says, “You knew you were in for fantasy, wonder, magic – real film magic.” Now, in this documentary, he tells the story of his lifelong love-affair with their movies, including The Red Shoes, The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp, Black Narcissus, and The Tales of Hoffmann and celebrates their ability to create “subversive commercial movies” and how deeply their films have influenced his own work.
