Art of Action season: Stuntwomen Night
Explore how beautiful and meaningless everything is at the same time in this hilarious and big-hearted adventure.
Director: Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
139 mins / 2022 / USA
Screening as part of our Art of Action season.
A middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led.
Starring Michelle Yeoh, this uniquely bizarre film sees her as overworked Eveyln Want, her laundromat teetering on the brink of failure and her marriage to wimpy husband Waymond on the rocks, she struggles to cope with everything, including a tattered relationship with her judgmental father and daughter. And as if facing a gloomy midlife crisis wasn’t enough, Evelyn must brace herself up for an unpleasant meeting with an impersonal bureaucrat: Deirdre, the shabbily dressed IRS auditor played to perfection by Jamie Lee Curtis.
However, as the stern agent loses patience, an inexplicable multiverse rift becomes an eye-opening exploration of parallel realities full of amazing VFX alongside brillaint stunt work from Yeoh and all the lead characters. A tour de force you can watch and rewatch.
Goody bag from Young Electrics included for all ticketholders!
The season has been co-curated by our Young Electrics film programmers group.
Why we’re shining a light on the world of stunts:
We are proud to be part of this BFI UK-wide season offering an action-packed journey through cinema from the jaw dropping stunts of silent cinema pioneers via the daredevil ethos of Hong Kong filmmaking to today’s intricate dynamic visual choreography.
The Art of Action season looks at the cinematic artistry, skill and craft involved in creating iconic sequences and films as well as engaging with the historic roots and cross-cultural influences of action cinema. The overarching focus is on the physicality of actors and stunt performers whose extraordinary on-screen exploits built on the boundary-pushing legacy of their pioneering predecessors.
Without stunts, the cinematic world would be a far less interesting place, mostly consisting of people talking, walking around and sitting down. And yet the people who do them, the daring stunt performers who throw themselves off things, drive at dangerous speeds, set themselves on fire and generally risk life and limb, just for our entertainment, are rarely celebrated. Art of Action is a chance to correct this!
Screening as part of Art of Action, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network.
