Electromagnetic radiation and 5G: meeting on afternoon of Thursday 30 January

5G phone masts have been happening a lot around Hastings lately, often in dubious circumstances such as wildly inaccurate illustrations, and unpersuasive allegations by planners such as ‘the proposed monopole would not appear out of place’. 5G is the 5th generation of wireless cellular network technology since it began in the early 1980s. Phone mast applications’ privileged status in the planning scheme of things has been the subject of much comment. A town centre talk next week will examine the issues. Bernard McGinley reports.

Changes in the Old Town enshrined in 5 High Street

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood had strong connections with Hastings and its hinterland. Holman Hunt stayed at Clive Vale Farm. D G Rossetti and Lizzie Siddall had 5 High Street in the Old Town, previously the site of George Wooll’s printshop and ‘Repository of Arts’ in the 1820s. A new book – Jenny Ridd, Walls, Beams, Love and Dreams: The People of  5 High Street, Hastings (2024) – explores this address through the prism of social and sexual change. Richard Saville has reviewed it.

Local parties air differing views on the devolution offer

The principle of devolving power from the centre seems generally welcome to Hastings’ political parties but reactions to what is on offer differ widely. In particular, what is seen as the undue haste of the Labour government in pushing for a response from local government and limiting that response to the upper-tier authorities has come in for criticism. Nick Terdre provides a brief guide to what the local parties are saying.
