The Hastings Book Festival is still a few weeks away, but dedicated fans can enjoy an early starter course following the announcement of a special additional event featuring Xiaolu Guo and Catherine Johnson at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery on Thursday 5 September. Chris Connelley reveals all.
For its gig on Tuesday 3 September Jazz Hastings welcomes an artiste who is quite a bit different from the usual guest – award-winning Swedish singer, lyricist and composer Rebecka Edlund, whose music is a joyous mix of jazz and Scandinavian folk music, herding calls, bird whistles and other sounds from nature, says Julian Norridge.
If you happen to be strolling along the seafront by Marine Court between now and the end of the month, you may well do a double-take as you pass Hastings Arts Forum. The current exhibition is a glimpse into the private collection of Patrick Glass: a man who embraces art and humanity but has no great love for how Picasso changed the art world in 1907. On Saturday 31 August, MSL Hastings will unveil a spectacular display of Kinetika’s 500 naturally dyed pennants, planted on the West Hill, high above Hastings old town and beach. The event is part of the town’s annual Coastal Currents festival and marks the launch of MSL’s part in Kinetika’s 2025 national Beach of Dreams festival. Kate Hodges writes.

After the success of last weekend’s Bottle Alley Art Market, the local creative community is now looking forward to the start of Coastal Currents 2024. Clarity and civic pride were in short supply as the planning committee of Hastings Borough Council (HBC) decided to approve planning permission for fake-olde plastic lampposts on Hastings Pier on 14 August. They forgot to consider the modern ones also there, and the serious concerns about the repair works, and also the requirements for a Listed Building in a Conservation Area. What was listed and what had won a major Prize were widely misunderstood. No-one mentioned ‘enhance and protect’, or the role of the Pier. Bernard McGinley reports.
