Free App Launched To Boost Tourism In Hastings
A new audio app for Hastings Old Town has been launched, catalysed by a partnership between Hastings Borough Council and Geotourist, providing a new, easy to use way of learning the history of this mediaeval town.
Geotourist is a free smartphone app which helps guide and educate users about their surrounding location using the knowledge and voices of local people and organisations.
The launch took place at the Fishermen’s Museum in Rock-a-Nore Road in Hastings Old Town. Present were the Mayor of Hastings, Cllr Bruce Dowling; local tourism officers; Geoff Hutchinson, a local historian who is ‘the voice’ on the app and the CEO of Geotourist, Shaon Talukder.
Shaon Talukder said “Geotourist is a free new, useful smartphone application to help guide and, at the same time, educate you about your surrounding location using the knowledge and voices of people and organisations around you.
“At its heart, Geotourist is a social media platform for audio/podcasts which you can make ‘location-based’ using our simple free web portal. This means that you can take existing audio clips or record new ones and literally drop these onto the map for others to find as they walk through your home town.
“You can create interesting walks or audio trails for your friends and family to help guide and share local knowledge with others in this novel way. As users of the mobile application walk along the trail, the appropriate audio will automatically play to tell you why the location is of interest.
“It is like having all the best local experts in your pocket to guide you around wherever you may be, whenever you need them.
“We are proud to have been able to work with Hastings Council on the Stade Walk project and hope that Geotourist improves access to local knowledge and encourages engagement of the local community and visitors with this historically rich town.
“We hope that more local people will become inspired to preserve and share their local knowledge and experiences in this exciting and easy new way.
“You can visit the geotourist website, geotourist.com to set up a free account or download the Geotourist app on iTunes or Google Play stores.”
