Flash Mob outside Brookers in Norman Road, St Leonards, by Gemma Nwankwo & Natasha Hill

Brookers, the hardware store in Norman Road finally closed its doors last week. The property, which was once a cinema, is up for auction.

Within seconds of hearing the news, local resident Dawn Dublin – one of the organisers of the St Leonards Film Society – had started a campaign to buy it as a community-owned and run resource.

At 3.30 on Tuesday, she organised a flash-mob style photo opportunity where local residents who want the building to be used as a community building turned up to show their support. There is a concern that the property could be purchased and demolished, to be replaced with an over-dense residential development.

The race is on to see if enough donations can be made for a ‘Community Buy-Out’ – watch this space for more information!
