Benjamin Zephaniah comes to Hastings Storytelling Festival 2017

One of the UK’s best loved poets, Benjamin Zephaniah, is to appear at the Hastings Storytelling Festival in November. Benjamin Zephaniah and The Revolutionary Minds have added an extra date onto their UK tour especially to accommodate the festival and will perform at the White Rock Theatre on Saturday 11 November at 7.30pm. Naomi Robinson writes.

The pioneering dub poet, writer, social commentator and music maker has teamed up with renowned producer, The Sea (who has worked with Toots and The Maytals, Rodney P, Massive Attack, The Wailers, Buju Banton) to create his new album, Revolutionary Minds. The album explores political and economic corruption, changing climate, rampant racism and the fascist patriarchy of today’s world.

The album was recorded in Hastings. ‘I really like the town’, says Benjamin, ‘It is really laid back. I love the history, the fresh air.’

The band provides rich, upbeat, hypnotic dub rhythm for Benjamin’s vocal and lyrical mastery and will be joined by backing vocalist, Amy True, who is fast becoming one of the UK’s most influential lyricists in her own right.

Supporting Benjamin Zephaniah is London-based British Nigerian poet Theresa Lola, the new Hammer and Tongue national slam champion.

Mandy Curtis of 18 Hours, the local company that produces the festival, said ‘We’re really happy Benjamin is on his way to Hastings – the town is in for a treat!’
