Klezmer Keilidh Ker-aziness!
This Saturday should see the Stade play host to a huge knees-up with a difference… hell and high water permitting! Hastings is very lucky to have the London Klezmer Quartet, writes Cathy Simpson.
Part of the UK Big Dance Weekend, they’ll be performing a Klezmer Keilidh – where the traditional music of European Jews will receive a dynamic, exuberant and completely irresistible treatment. It will feature their own tunes, too, seamlessly moving you ‘to tears, to dancing and back again!’
We will meet the ‘Yiddish Fred Astaire’, Steve Weintraub, and will learn about freylecks, bulgars and shers (so we’re told!) so, to all beginners: don’t be afraid, nobody else will be any wiser than you are! And to all folkies – it’s a must.
The Klezmer Quartet is an all-female band founded in 2009, and since then they’ve played at venues as diverse as the Victoria & Albert Museum and Cecil Sharp House, and toured as far away as Australia. You can find out more about the band here, and listen to a sample of their music here. And as for the dancing – you’ll need to come along and try it yourself!
