Janey Moffat in Kabul during the filming of 'Afghanistan: a difficult birth'

Four international film nights: Women Go Global

As part of their on going Women Go Global project, Hastings Women’s Voice are holding four nights of International films. HOT’s Grace Vogiatzis reports.

Screening four films, taken from four different cultural perspectives, Hastings Women’s Voice is continuing their line up of Women Go Global events that have aimed at bringing different cultures together, and taking an International perspective on women’s rights.

The mini film festival has a truly diverse line up of films: mixing local and global perspectives, critically acclaimed films with small budget gems. The films look to highlight areas where women’s lives are impaired by political or traditional establishments – from the challenging of attitudes towards ageing by women in St Leonard’s, to turning scrutiny on the experience of those trapped in modern slavery.

Aiming to get people talking, following each screening there will be an open discussion led by a woman from a cultural background connected to the film.

The festival begins on Thursday 12 June with local film maker, Jenny Moffat’s film ‘Afghanistan; A Difficult Birth’, a moving documentary recording the experience of new mothers in Afghanistan.

On June 19, the festival will screen ‘I am slave’, a poignant portrayal of an individuals experience caught within the grim reality of human trafficking.

From Su Warren’s ‘Extraordinary TImes’

The wonderfully unusual ‘Extraordinary Times’ will be the third screening, a documentary celebrating ageing women of St Leonards by film maker Su Warren.

The festival ends with ‘WADJDA’, a story of young girl – determined to buy that bicycle – which explores the difficult realities of women living in Saudi Arabia, made by the first ever female Saudi film maker Haifaa al-Mansour.

All the screenings are free, with some refreshments provided. Held at Hastings Arts Forum, spaces are limited. Booking is recommended.
