New comedy club at Azur

Comedy in Hastings is about to get a shot in the arm with a new bi-monthly comedy club starting at Azur restaurant in association with Happy Duck Comedy. Nick Terdre reports.

The Azur comedy club makes its debut on St George’s Day – Saturday 23 April – with a show titled Comedy Explosion. The headline act is Tania Edwards, well-known from TV shows such as Mock The Week and a regular on radio. Tania is also a veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe, for which she is currently putting together her fifth solo show.

Musical comedy will be provided by James McDowell from Brighton, who began his stage career in a grunge rock band before deciding that comedy was the life for him. He performs his own humorous songs, accompanying himself on guitar.

Another highlight will be Alistair Martin, the hypnotist who goes under the stage name of the Mind Enforcer. An executive of the Hypnosis Circle, Alistair is billed as one of the UK’s most outrageous hypnotists; in his act he takes volunteers into a journey through their own imaginations where dreams and fiction become real.

Hosting the show will be Bognor-based comic Paul Traynor, a former Bluecoat who had a lead role in the West End show Factor 25, a comical – and cynical – look at TV talent shows. The show has just ended its run but a tour round the provinces is being contemplated.

The Azur comedy club will present a show every two months, Alistair, the moving force behind Happy Duck Comedy, tells HOT. Future evenings are lined up for early July and early September. He is looking forward to Azur establishing itself as a high-class comedy venue, with a regular string of big-name comedians like Tania Edwards and Richard Digance, who is lined up for September.

posterAlistair, who lives in Bexhill, was formerly a hypnotherapist, but found a life of helping people to give up smoking somewhat limited, and become a stage hypnotist some 15 years ago. Already a well-known figure on the comedy trail in Essex, he is optimistic that the Azur venture will help to cement his reputation in Hastings.

Comedy Explosion Saturday 23 April at Azur Restauarant, Marina Pavilion, TN38 0BU. Doors open 7pm, show starts 8.30pm. Tickets £12.50 from 01424 447 461 or alistairmartin.nutickets.com.
