Vote for our marine conservation zone!

A government consultation is under way on designating our local sea as a marine conservation zone (MCZ), a marine protected area that safeguards some of the nation’s best or most vulnerable seabed habitats and marine wildlife. Erica Smith and Nick Terdre report.

Mobilise to save our NHS!

Under the scorching sun 50,000 people marched through London last weekend to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS and to fight for its survival.  Despite government promises of an extra £20 billion, there is widespread concern that without grassroots mobilisation, this much cherished institution will be run down and privatised, as Lucette Davies of East Sussex Save the NHS Campaign explains.

Celebrating women in Hastings

Saturday 23 June was a glorious summer day. Anyone walking over the West Hill that morning might have been taken aback at the sight of Edwardian suffragettes, complete with placards, making their way towards Warrior Square Gardens. But it was no dream: these suffragettes were just a few of more than 300 local women of all ages, who dressed as suffragists and suffragettes, wore flowered hats and white, purple and green sashes and marched along the seafront to celebrate one hundred years since women won the vote in Britain. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked Ann Kramer of Women’s Voice to report on the event. (Photos by Jake Burnett and Rosanna.)

Jellyfish, UFOs and Speedos

What is it about swimming in the sea that turns otherwise rational (well semi-rational) human beings into tide-obsessed amphibians? It’s certainly not the freezing-to-lukewarm temperatures, the chance encounters with Unidentified Floating Objects, or being frequently described by passers by in words to the effect of: ‘that person must be bleeping insane’. Luca Bercelli writes.
