Lockdown takeaway and deliveries: Take 2

Is this the second or the third lockdown? HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths has lost count – and at times lost her way entirely. Luckily some good Hastings and St Leonards people haven’t and are keeping us cheerful with takeaway food treats. HOT covered this topic in the last lockdown, so these are a few that are either late additions or that we overlooked previously – apologies for that.

The Stag Inn, in Hastings Old Town, had a new chef not long before lockdown over a year ago so did not have time to show his culinary flare. However, now there is an opportunity to taste The Stag’s wares at a Friday and Saturday doorstep bake sale, not to mention a Friday night takeaway/delivery and a Sunday lunch roast in a box, all freshly prepared and delivered ready to cook and serve at home.

The menus will change regularly. for the bake sale, there is no need to order, just turn up at the the door from 11am to 2pm to view and buy such goodies as sourdough loaf, focaccia, sausage roll, black pudding scotch egg, chicken leek and mushroom pie as well cheesecake, Jaffa cake, doughnuts and orange polenta cake. Oh and a coffee éclair.

The Friday night Chippy Tea consists of fish and triple-cooked chips (£9), chicken & mushroom pie and chips (£9), cheese & onion pie with triple-cooked chips (£8), plus mushy pea etc accompaniments and a pud. You can collect or there is  local delivery from 6 to 8pm.

Sunday roast is one course for £14 or two for £18. Recently on the menu were chicken breast, lamb and wild mushroom pithivier with roast potatoes, veg and gravy. And spotted dick, dark chocolate tart or cheese. Pre-ordering is essential. Delivery is between 10am and 12pm.

The Stag Inn is at 14 All Saints Street, Hastings,  TN34 3BJ. Call 07585 962820 to order or for more details. There is a minimum spend of £12.

Deli at the Galleria

Galleria

The site of the Galleria in Norman Road has gone through several incarnations and is now a fish restaurant and deli. Currently, their lunch menu is available Wed-Sat, from midday. It changes weekly. Recently it was Jerusalem artichoke soup, fritto misto, arancino and vegetable lasagne.

The dinner menu is served Friday and Saturday. Recently it was herring, plaice and fennel and an apple, and for dessert an almond sponge. £25 per person.

Menus can be found at the Galleria’s  Facebook and Instagram pages.

Best to order early as dinner can get booked up. Prepayment is required. Email info@galleriabar.co.uk to place an order. They will then call to take an over-the-phone payment. Dinner is served from around 5pm to 8pm, it is served warm and ready to be eaten.

This is for collection only, although occasionally there are limited delivery slots intended mainly for those who order wine which, during lockdown, cannot be picked up but only delivered.

The Galleria is at 39 Norman Road, St Leonards, TN38 0EG.

St Clements

St Clements have updated their takeaway system. You can now pre-order their wonderful bakery fare: sausage rolls, cheese pies and chicken liver terrine, as well as delicious cakes. AND a 3-course meal. Recently it was prawn and pork dumplings, Teryaki salmon and Japanese cheesecake. £25 per person.

You can also turn up on Saturday and buy their truly delicious food from the restaurant door. A word of warning: their food is extremely popular so it does tend to get sold out fast.

Look at their weekly menus on Instagram (@stclementsstleonards) and pre-order by 12pm on Thursday. Pick up on Saturday between 12 and 2.30pm at 3 Mercatoria, St Leonards, TN38 0EB.

The Hempist, a vegan meal

The Hempist

The Hempist, a vegan restaurant, opened last year ten days before lockdown. Takeaways and deliveries simply weren’t in their business plan. However, open seven days a week they have become very busy. Some friends even got their Christmas lunch from them. They do non burger burgers and non sausage sausages, as well as desserts. And they do a Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding – which is apparently very difficult to make Vegan-style.

The Hempist, 3 Marine Parade, Hastings TN34 3AG. Open 5-9.30pm. Tel 01424 425608. Depending on how busy they are, delivery can be made in as little as 15 minutes but allow half an hour or so. Delivery charge is £3 for Hastings and St Leonards. More for further afield: they will, if they can, deliver to Battle and Bexhill.
