One-off Pop-Up Opera tour date in Hastings
St Mary in the Castle is bringing a new ‘Mozart Double Bill’ to Hastings this summer for one show only as part of Pop-Up Opera’s UK tour, where they will perform two delightful comedies: Der Schauspieldirektor & Bastien und Bastienne.
Innovative touring opera company, Pop-Up Opera aims to broaden the appeal of opera and to challenge the way opera is performed, by taking it into lots of different spaces and making it intimate and engaging. The company aims to reach those who are hesitant about opera, as well as dedicated opera lovers.
Pop-Up Opera: rehearsals
For one date only, Pop-Up Opera will perform two of Mozart’s one-act comedies: Der Schauspieldirecktor in which a pair of actresses battle it out to be the prima donna – and Bastien and Bastienne where a pair of lovers tease and test their feelings for each other. These brilliant gems showcase Mozart’s gorgeous music and sense of playfulness, the first written in the last 5 years of his life and the second when he was just 12 years old! Two lively and engaging stories to delight you either side of an interval.
The production will be directed by New British Music Theatre Award nominee, Anna Pool, critically acclaimed for her bold and fierily original directing style.
Pop-Up Opera was founded by Clementine Lovell in 2011 and is run with her co-producer, Fiona Johnston. The company has been built from scratch and has grown from an initial 12 performances to 90 performances a year with 3 – 4 productions over 3 seasons.
