Claire Martin

Jazz Hastings December gig

Jazz Hastings has a real Christmas treat in store for its next session: celebrated jazz singer Claire Martin, ranked by Jazz Times USA as “among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet”, will be appearing alongside fabled guitarist, Jim Mullen on Tuesday 4 December at the East Hastings Sea Angling Association on the Stade. Julian Norridge writes.

Martin and Mullen have worked together frequently over the years, but for 2018 they have developed a new project celebrating the work of legendary guitarist Wes Montgomery, who died 50 years ago at the age of just 45.

From the late ‘50s to the late ‘60s, Montgomery was the pre-eminent jazz guitarist in the world. And he had a huge influence on many who followed. Among those who have acknowledged their debt to him are George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Jimi Hendrix, Pat Metheny and Stevie Wonder.

And, of course, Jim Mullen. Just like Wes Montgomery, Jim plays exclusively using his thumb rather than a plectrum, which gives him a unique and instantly recognizable style.

In a career which began in the late ‘60s, Mullen has played and recorded with many jazz greats, including Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith, Percy Sledge, Jimmy Witherspoon and Georgie Fame. For fifteen years he led the fabled Morrisey-Mullen band with the late saxophonist, Dick Morrisey.

Described by Jazzwise magazine as “one of the great jazz guitarists working today”, he has won many British music awards, including ‘Best Guitar’ twice in the British Telecom Jazz Awards and ‘Best Guitar’ in the British Jazz Awards for 2000.

Claire Martin needs little introduction to the Jazz Hastings audience. She tours constantly, quite often appearing with our very own Liane Carroll, and has made more than 18 albums (three of them with Jim Mullen). One of the most recent led The Times to call her “our finest jazz singer”.

Her status as a tour de force on the UK jazz scene has brought her many awards, including winning the British Jazz Awards no less than seven times. As a broadcaster, she co-presented BBC Radio 3’s flag ship jazz programme ‘Jazz Line Up’ for seventeen years.

Claire Martin and Jim Mullen: East Hastings Sea Angling Association, 4 December. Doors open at 7.45 for an 8.30 start. Tickets are £10 on the door.
