Hastings Creative Summer

Hastings Creative Summer 2018

Creative fun for young people in Hastings. The Hastings Creative Summer Programme provides a creative service with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and creative media focused activities for kids aged 11-18, writes Vanessa Alves.

I spoke to Margaret Sheehy, director of MSL Projects at Rock House, who helped to put the programme together in partnership with the Royal Institution. We spoke about the fact that Hastings is a very creative place with many different talents and abilities.

The Hastings Creative Summer Programme showcases this by bringing in members of creative industries to share those skills with young people. The programme is designed to be practical: the teens will spend time learning about the subject they have chosen, whether it is aerospace engineering and robotics, documentary photography or branding and textile design. And they will also spend a lot of time DOING, gaining hands-on experience. And each participant will also get the chance to gain an insight into the creative industries on the Creative Mystery Tour.

This kind of programme has been in talks for the last couple of years in the hope of creative regeneration in Hastings. What became apparent during our conversation was the collective desire among the partnerships to see Hastings as a place of opportunity: a town where it is possible to be creative, to make a living and to give access to young people into these industries.

The Hastings Creative Programme has attracted young people not only from Hastings, but St Leonards on Sea and Bexhill. The classes have already proved to be popular and are over-subscribed.

If you wish to be on the list for further information about future events, please  contact admin@mslprojects.co.uk and quote ‘Hastings Creative Summer’.

This programme has been put together against the backdrop of severe cuts to services for young people. Everyone involved in this year’s events is aware of these cuts in spending, but are looking toward the future, investing in young people and in Hastings and the surrounding areas .

Funding for the programme comes from East Sussex County Council, Hastings Bid, i-Rock, Hastings Library, MSL Discover and MSL Digital with Hastings Opportunity Fun and White Rock Neighbourhood Ventures and additional funding from Love Hastings.

Planned activities

These are the kind of activities that will be taking place over this summer:

Media Slam workshops are a chance to get hands-on with virtual reality, documentary photography, music and digital technology, textile design and screen printing, running events and gigs, and how to be a young entrepreneur. Workshops will take place in and around Rock House on Cambridge Road. Ages 11 to 18.

Creative Mystery Tour is a two-hour insight into a range of jobs in the creative industries. Meet the people who do the work in their own studios and join them for  lunch afterwards. Each week will offer a different mix. These will take place in Rock House. Ages 14+.

Ri [Royal Institution] Masterclasses will take place on Saturday mornings at Hastings library from 10am to 12.30pm. Complete all four and earn a certificate from the Royal Institution.
