Hastings United Football Club helps to get kids reading

On Wednesday 29 January Hastings United Football club launched their book corner offering free children’s books as part of a new campaign, ‘Read Your Way’, aimed at improving reading levels in children and young people in Hastings.

Jeremy Birch: a hard act to follow

Tributes to Jeremy Birch, the former Hastings Borough Council leader who died as a result of a severe stroke last week, continue to flow in. He would, said one, be a hard act to follow. A memorial service and event are being planned and a donations page has been opened. Nick Terdre reports.

Former actress still in fine voice as she hits 100

Terry Randall, better known locally as Terry Collier – who had a leading role as Lancashire Annie in the classic wartime film Millions Like Us – celebrated her 100th birthday last Thursday, 30 October. Friends joined her for a cream tea party at the Coastguard Tearooms at Fairlight, where stills from her acting career decorated the tables so that everyone could see just what she got up to in her heyday. Terry’s daughter Jane Nunn recalls her acting career.

Encouraged by the positive feedback from the Don’t Count Yourself Out campaign to encourage young people to engage in the democratic process, James Bacon has given primary school children the chance to engage in debate, and found they weren’t shy of expressing their opinions, as he describes below. He has also gained the support of Hastings’ new mayor as he ventures into new areas to promote the importance of political involvement.
