Seeing trees in a different light

Trees are always an interesting subject for artists and photographers. And a very particular depiction of them can be seen at an intriguing exhibition at the Lucy Bell Gallery. This is not an exhibition concentrating on specific species, more a contemplative riff on the effect of trees on the individual artists. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths asked co-curator Lucy Bell about how the exhibition, which she and John Stezaker have been talking about for 18 months, came together.

Exiles’ proud journey home

Sometimes an outsider’s eye is needed to point up things that we see every day and take somewhat for granted. Hastings and St Leonards, as we know, has always seen an influx of people making their way from elsewhere to the south coast and embedding themselves in the community. But it is not only British people. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths spoke to photographer Tom Hunter about his taxi driver project A Journey Home which opens on 9 February at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

Launch of Silver Hill Press

There is definitely an appetite, pride and support for enterprising, affordable, well produced local publishing. Hastings Fish Cook Book is a specialist private publishing company, which published its first cook book in 2009 and produced three different editions and several reprints. The first edition sold out of a print run of 10,00o. Now there is another independent enterprise, Silverhill Press. Photographer Ian Land had the great idea of publishing a series of art monographs starting with photography and then extending out to poetry, possibly illustration and collage. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths asked Ian some questions about the project.

Maggi Hambling’s The Quick & the Dead

One of the most popular paintings in the Jerwood Gallery is Maggi Hambling’s Portrait of Frances Rose; when it is not on display, it is often enquired after. And our very own Erica Smith won the Jerwood short story prize with an imagined fictional account of Frances Rose’s life. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to the Jerwood to see Hambling’s exhibition, The Quick & the Dead.

Not the Final Major Project at HAF

When you hear the words ‘graduate show’, the heart tends to sink. So it was with some trepidation that HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to Hastings Arts Forum to see Not the Final Major Project, a graduate collaboration photography show between PhotoHastings and Brighton Fringe. But she couldn’t have been more wrong; her fears were totally unfounded. It is an

Burning Man in St Leonards

Sometimes you think you know things and then realise that you simply don’t. Naively, HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths thought a festival was a festival was a festival – a gathering, mainly music-orientated with some side events. But bumping up against the Burning Man Festival, it explains on its website: ‘Burning Man is not a festival. Burning Man is a community.’ So that put her straight… i

Yumino Seki is Under the Moon at the museum

So often you hear in Hastings, the phrase “Aren’t we lucky”– about the weather, the sea, the culture and the diverse creativity of art and music. Surprisingly, amongst this diversity is Butoh dance, created, choreographed and performed by Yumino Seki. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths talked to her about her latest production at Hastings Museum, Gekka, Under the Moon
