Militarisation in Schools

A local Head Teacher, Paula Radice, addressed the subject of ‘Militarisation in Schools’ at a packed meeting in Hastings on 5 September . She called for a balanced view on the military to be allowed in schools. Working in the education system she has observed the changing relationship between schools and the military, and traces the changes back to UK deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. Hiroshima Day 2017

Hastings Against War will commemorate those who lost their lives in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 with a ceremony at the boating lake in Alexandra Park on Sunday 6 August. An estimated 185,000 people perished when US airforce planes bombed the cities, dying as a result of the initial blast, due to fires sparked by the bombs, and as a result of radiation-sickness caused by the explosions. Resist Trump

American Independence Day, 4 July, saw a meeting in Hastings which focused on the resistance within America to Donald Trump’s presidency. US-born local resident, Tamara Stevens, spoke about the opposition triggered by Trump’s election victory last November. At the meeting she explained that central to the opposition has been Indivisible: a guide to the most effective ways to influence Congress. The guide was produced by former Congressional workers who understood what made politicians listen, an insight gained by observing the success of the right-wing Tea Party movement in influencing US politics. John Enefer writes.

Fly Kites Not Drones 2017

The other day on the East Hill, a drone flew over the trees above my head. The first I have seen. It was on a mission to somewhere. I didn’t like it… I value my Drone Empty sky and regularly express my gratitude for it, aware that in other countries, people have threatening drones in their lives. And if them, why not us – the technology isn’t the monopoly of certain people in certain lands. Here, John Enefer writes about participating in Fly Kites Not Drones.
